Sat down to watch John Wick last night. Absolutely cracking film. Keanu Reeves plays John Wick, a retired hit man who runs into a hell of a lot of bad luck in a short space of time and goes on a rampage to kill the people who wronged him.
It’s a simple premise, but it is told extremely well. It doesn’t rely on origin flashbacks or long expository dialogue to tell you why John Wick does what he does. Instead, they use other characters reactions to flesh out his character, which I found really effective. And even though his character comes across as some unstoppable killing machine, he still very vulnerable, he gets injured and takes beatings like everyone else.
The action scenes are some of the best i have seen since Mad Max: Fury Road. The film takes about half an hour or so to get going but when it does, holy crap it does not stop. The gun play is insanely well choreographed and they didn’t rely on flashy cuts and editing tricks like other films *cough* Transformers *cough*. It was very refreshing to see a film where the gun fights are actually realistic, characters didn’t have infinite bullets in their guns and silencers don’t make that *pew pew* noise they do in other films. The nightclub shootout alone might be one of my favorite action scenes of all time now.
One things I absolutely loved in this film is the idea of the Continental, a hotel just for assassins where no business of any kind is permitted. I’d love to see a film or TV series based around it, focusing on different assassins.
Overall I would say this film is one of the best action films of recent years and with news of a sequel coming I can’t wait to see the further adventures of John Wick. Oh and one more thing, if you’re a dog lover AVOID the first 10/15 minutes or so.
